Lena Horne was visiting boxer Joe Louis while he trained. The book Stormy Weather: The Life of Lena Horne, details their romance. Both were married to other people, and Louis had even become a father in February 1943. But the world champion of heavyweight boxing kept visiting the Stormy Weather set to see Horne, whom he’d reportedly met at the

New York City nightclub

Café Society.

Joe spoke openly of their on-again, off-again affair to his friend Alice Key; Horne flaunted a mink coat he’d given to her. On November 12, 1942, Billy Rowe had reported the widespread rumor that Louis, then an army sergeant would divorce his wife to marry Horne. Both he and Horne issued vague denials. “I think that Lena is a grand person, on and off the screen, but that doesn’t mean I want to marry her or vice versa,” said the boxer. Added Horne, Sergeant Louis and I have been friends for several years and to me, like fifty million others, he’s a symbol of greatness. I can certainly admire him and be in his company without hopping off to the alter.”

Sidney Poitier and Diahann Carroll attend The 36th Academy Awards in Santa Monica on April 13, 1964.

Diahann Carroll publicly spoke about her 9-year affair with

Sidney Poitier in her 2008 book

The Legs Are The Last To Go: Aging, Acting, Marrying, and Other Things I Learned The Hard Way. Carroll claims that Poitier persuaded her to divorce her husband Monte Kay, and that Poitier said he would leave his wife to be with her. When Carroll got her divorce, Poitier didn’t keep up his end of the bargain. Carroll said she dated another man out of frustration, which didn’t sit well with Poitier.

“Sidney called me at my hotel … ‘You bitch, whore, tramp,’ he yelled. ‘I know he just left your bed. I won’t have you running around with other men. You belong to me!’” the New York Post quoted her as writing in the book.

She wrote that Poitier later told her he’d finally left his wife, Juanita Hardy. He even bought Carroll a ring and made her decorate a 10-room Riverside Drive apartment he’d bought.

“I was only home a few days when he called to say his wife was having second thoughts. Our wedding plans would have to be postponed,” wrote Carroll.

She added: “When the apartment was ready and I was about to move my daughter in with me, Sidney told me he didn’t want her there … He changed the locks so I couldn’t get in. Then he made me write him a check to offset his purchase and decorating costs. I did as I was told, submissive and desperate.”

Despite her decision to detail their affair, Carroll says Poitier, who did not comment on the book, continues to be her friend.

“Sidney and I are now friends. That’s a lovely thing that comes as you age – forgiveness and perhaps a relaxing of standards,” wrote Carroll.

Gavin Rossdale and his former male lover, British pop singer Peter “Marilyn” Robinson.

In his 1995 autobiography Take It Like A Man, Boy George wrote that in the 1980s Rossdale had an affair with the British singer Peter Robinson, a.k.a. Marilyn. Initially Gavin and Marilyn denied the story. Then in 2009, Marilyn confirmed it to InTouch magazine and said they had been “together five years” in the 1980s.

Marilyn also said, “Gavin and Gwen are perfect for each other, but he was the love of my life.” In 2010, Rossdale admitted to Details magazine that it had been an experimentation and “part of growing up”.

In August 2015 after news of Gwen Stefani filing for divorce Marilyn said to Radar Online, “He called our relationship an experimentation, indiscretion of youth. Our experiment went on for five years! If you don’t live in your own truth, whatever it may be, how can you be happy? You’re not at peace with yourself.”

Whitney Houston and Jermaine Jackson performing their duet Nobody Loves Me Like You Do on the soap opera “As The World Turns” on July 25, 1984.

Jermaine Jackson had a year-long affair with Whitney Houston while he was still married to Hazel Gordy. Their relationship inspired the video for Whitney’s 1985 single Saving All My Love For You, which tells the story of a woman’s romance with a married man, there is even a lookalike of Jermaine in the video.

Whitney Houston: “When I did ‘Saving All My Love,’ I was going through a terrible love affair. He was married — and that will never work out for anybody, never, no way, forget about it.”

In his 2011 book, You are Not Alone: Michael, Through A Brother’s Eyes, which was released a year before her death, Jermaine wrote about how he struggled with his feelings for her, although put them aside for the sake of his marriage.

Jermaine Jackson: “These were turning into duets between temptation and forbidden love, and the studio sessions gave us what felt like stolen time together. I arrived on those days with butterflies, because the whole experience of being around Whitney was intoxicating. I admitted silently to myself that I had the strongest feelings for a remarkable woman, whose heart was as beautiful as her face, and it became increasingly hard to sing love songs with all that motion and unspoken passion between us”.

Jermaine also revealed that his brother Michael had warned him off pursuing an intimate relationship with Whitney. “He didn’t fuel the temptation as some guys would. He reminded me about Hazel, about family… As much as I wanted to lose myself in all these feelings, I told her to wait. Ultimately, we had to go our separate ways and it killed us both.”

According to FBI documents, Joan Baez and Martin Luther King Jr.

Loretta Young with her daughter Judy Lewis

Loretta gave birth to her daughter Judy on November 6, 1935. Judy was the result of an affair with Clark Gable during filming of The Call of the Wild (1935). In 1935 extramarital affairs and out-of-wedlock pregnancies were so scandalous it could have ended both of their careers. Loretta, a devout Catholic refused to have an abortion.

She spent most of her pregnancy in Europe to avoid Hollywood gossip. She resorted to giving the baby, who had a false name listed as her mother on her birth certificate, to an orphanage and at 19 months old she formally adopted her biological daughter. Loretta did all she could to conceal Judy’s paternity. Judy inherited Clark’s trademark big ears so Loretta used bonnets to hide them. At 7-years-old Judy’s ears were surgically pinned back.

Judy saw her father, who died in 1960, only once, when she was 15 but at the time she didn’t know he was her father. In 1958, Judy had an identity crisis and was hesitant to marry her fiancé so he told her Clark Gable is her father. She confronted her mother in 1966 who then finally revealed the truth. In her 1994 memoir, “Uncommon Knowledge,” Judy expressed her upset that her mother never admitted that her adoption was all a sham. Loretta refused to speak with her daughter for 3 years after her memoir’s publication. After years of rumors and criticisms, Loretta confessed in her memoir that Judy is her biological daughter and it was indeed Gable who fathered her baby, but she refused to allow the book to be published until after her death in 2000. Judy died in 2011 at the age of 76.

In 2015, Linda Lewis,

Loretta’s daughter-in-law,

stated publicly

that

Loretta

had confided to her before her death that Gable had raped

Loretta, and that, though the two had flirted on-set, there had been no affair.
