On this day in music history: March 5, 1977 – “Love Theme From "A Star Is Born (Evergreen )” by Barbra Streisand hits #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 3 weeks, also topping the Adult Contemporary chart for 6 weeks on January 15, 1977. Written by Barbra Streisand and Paul Williams, it is the second number one single for the superstar pop singer and Oscar winning actress. Subtitled “Evergreen” after a lyric in the song, it is written as the theme for the remake of “A Star Is Born” starring Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. It is Streisand’s first foray into songwriting, having learned how to play guitar for her role in the film. While practicing guitar one day, she comes up with the basic chords for the song. Enlisting the assistance of songwriter and musician Paul Williams (“We’ve Only Just Begun”, “Rainy Days And Mondays”, “Out In The Country”), he helps to turn it into a finished song. Williams is asked to re-write the lyrics numerous times by Streisand before she feels that they are right. Co-produced by veteran producer and engineer Phil Ramone and Streisand, “Evergreen” is recorded in March of 1976. With Ramone engineering in the studio, he records Streisand’s vocals on set by way of remote satellite recording using Class-A telephone lines, one of the first times this groundbreaking technique is employed. While filming the live concert sequence at Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, AZ in front of a crowd of 70,000, the singer publicly performs “Evergreen” for the first time. The enthusiastic audience response affirms that the will be a hit. Released in early December of 1976 as the first single from the soundtrack to “A Star Is Born”, the record takes off immediately. Entering the Hot 100 at #72 on December 11, 1976, it climbs to the top the chart twelve weeks later. One week after the song falls from the top spot on the charts, “Evergreen” wins Streisand and Williams the Academy Award for Best Song. It also wins two Grammy Awards including Song Of The Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female. “Evergreen” is covered by Frank Sinatra, Johnny Mathis, Kenny Rogers, Ramsey Lewis, co-songwriter Paul Williams, and Luther Vandross. It is also recorded again by Barbra Streisand as a duet with superstar musician and producer Babyface on her 2014 album “Partners”. “Love Theme From "A Star Is Born (Evergreen )” is certified Platinum in the US by the RIAA.
