On this day in music history: January 5, 1979 – “Look Sharp!”, the debut album by Joe Jackson is released in the UK (US release is in April 1979). Produced by David Kershenbaum, it is recorded at Eden Studios in London from Mid – Late 1978. Having played in various bands and on the English cabaret circuit since the early 70’s, Jackson is signed to A&M Records in 1978 after a producer hears his demo tape. The first album from the British singer, songwriter and musician is released as both a standard 12" LP and as a limited edition pressed on two 10" vinyl discs. It quickly establishes Jackson as a critical and commercial favorite, spinning off the hit singles “Is She Really Going Out With Him?” (#21 Pop) and the title track. The albums’ iconic cover photo taken by photographer Brian Griffin, features a shot of Jackson’s white Denson winklepicker shoes. The album is remastered and reissued in 2001 with Don’t Ask Me" and “You Got The Fever” (the original B-sides of “One More Time” and “Is She Really Going Out With Him?”) as bonus tracks. Out of print on vinyl since the late 80’s, it is remastered and reissued as a 180 gram LP by Intervention Records in 2016. “Look Sharp!” peaks at number forty on the UK album chart, number twenty on the Billboard Top 200, and is certified Gold in the US by the RIAA.
