On this day in music history: October 8, 1982 – “I Know There’s Something Going On” by Frida is released (European release is in August 1982). Written by Russ Ballard, it is the US debut single for the Norwegian born Swedish pop vocalist. Prior to the official disbanding of Swedish pop super group ABBA in December of 1982, Anni-Frid Lyngstad (aka Frida) decides to resume her solo career. With her sights set on the English speaking and international markets, Frida looks to make a record that sounds nothing like her previous solo records or work with ABBA. After hearing his debut solo album “Face Value”, Frida hires Phil Collins to produce her album. Prior to beginning work on his second solo album, “Hello, I Must Be Going!”, they begin work on her album at ABBA’s Polar Studios in Stockholm, Sweden in February of 1982, before moving to AIR Studios in London in March. Having recorded numerous singles and two albums in her native Sweden between 1967 and 1975, the singer puts the word out that she is looking for songs for her album. A number of top songwriters respond to the call including Stephen Bishop (“On And On”, “It Might Be You”), Giorgio Moroder Pete Bellotte (Donna Summer), and Russ Ballard (“New York Groove”, “You Can Do Magic”, “Winning”). Ballard, formerly the guitarist and lead vocalist of the British rock band Argent submits the song “I Know There’s Something Going On” for Frida’s album. Anchored by Collins’ powerful trademark drumming, the track features many of the same musicians that also performed on “Face Value” including Daryl Steurmer (guitar), Mo Foster (bass) and Peter Robinson (keyboards). The song is a standout from the outset and is chosen to be the title track and first single from the album. Released in Europe first in the late Summer, “I Know There’s Something Going On” quickly hits the top five in several countries. In the US, the song and accompanying music video become favorites on radio and MTV, with the single peaking at #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 on March 26, 1983. In spite of this success, it is the only chart single in the US for the former ABBA vocalist. Over the years, “I Know There’s Something Going On” is covered by Luxxury, Sleepthief and Jorn. The drums from the original track are also sampled by Foo Fighters on their song “Erase/Replace” in 2007.
