On this day in music history: May 13, 1989 – “Start Of A Romance” by Skyy hits #1 on the Billboard R&B singles chart for 2 weeks. Written by Tommy McConnell and Joe Williams, it is the second R&B chart topper for the Brooklyn, NY based R&B/Funk octet. After more than five years with their original label Salsoul Records, Skyy move to Capitol Records in 1985 after Salsoul shuts down. Their lone album for their new label is unsuccessful, and Skyy breaks up. After two year long hiatus, the band reforms and begin working on new material, signing a new deal with Atlantic Records. Drummer McConnell comes up with a new song titled “Start Of A Romance” with friend/keyboardist Joe Williams. Issued as the first single and title track to their first Atlantic album, it becomes their first number one R&B single since “Call Me” in 1982. Though surprisingly, “Start Of A Romance” does not chart of the Billboard Hot 100.
