Etta Duryea was Jack’s first wife, they married in 1911. She was a
Brooklyn society woman. Jack’s infidelity, his abusive behavior and the hostile reaction of the public caused her to became depressed. She committed suicide in 1912. When Jack Johnson died in 1946, his wife
buried him in Chicago, in a grave next to Etta Duryea.
